Indiana Derby Day Raises Funds for Numerous Charities

The 15th running of the Grade II $500,000 Indiana Derby was held Saturday, Oct. 3 at Hoosier Park Racing and Casino. While racing was being held on the track, several guests in the special Indiana Derby tent were enjoying additional activities, including a silent auction to benefit the United Way of Madison County.

The Indiana Derby tent included 400 guests for the afternoon of racing action. In between races, guests participated in both a silent and live auction throughout the day, raising more than $7,000 for the local chapter of United Way. The silent auction included sports memorabilia, theme baskets, jewelry, and gift certificates.

In addition to the silent auction for the United Way of Madison County, additional auction items were available to benefit the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, who raised more than $5,000 during the afternoon.

Guests of the Indiana Derby tent were also treated to a special appearance by Calvin Borel, who rode in the Indiana Derby. Earlier in 2009, Borel grabbed national attention with his win aboard Mine That Bird in the Kentucky Derby and later his Preakness win aboard the standout three-year-old filly Rachel Alexandra.

Borel also signed autographs and met with fans to raise money for the Disabled Jockey’s Fund. He signed more than 90 autographs to raise just under $500. Hoosier Park placed an additional $1,500 into the pot to bring the total donation to the worthwhile cause to $2,000.
